Dear Optimisation Colleague,

The ASMO-UK conferences on Engineering Design Optimization began in 1999 with ASMO-UK-1 held in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. These have provided a forum for researchers, developers and users of multidisciplinary optimization from within and outside the UK to present the latest theoretical and computational developments, applications, ideas, experiences and problems in the application of design optimization tools to real life engineering problems. Relevant topics include:

  • Artificial Intelligence in design optimization
  • Application of optimization tools to realistic engineering problems
  • Constraint handling (manufacturing constraints, non-constant constraints etc)
  • Design of experiments, sampling techniques
  • Design, package, cost or process optimisation
  • Distributed computing in design optimisation
  • Education in engineering optimisation
  • Fluid optimisation
  • Industrial applications (all fields)
  • Integration of optimisation in the design and manufacturing process
  • Inverse problems
  • Machine Learning
  • Meta-modelling, surrogate models
  • Multi-disciplinary / multi-physics optimisation
  • Multi-objective optimisation
  • Numerical aspects of optimisation
  • Optimisation algorithms
  • Optimisation for MEMS, nanotechnology, etc.
  • Optimisation under uncertainty, noise
  • Reliability and robust design optimisations
  • Sensitivity analysis
  • Structural optimisation (FEM, BEM, MBS etc)
  • Topology, shape and sizing optimisation
Following the COVID-19 years, we worked closely with our colleagues in the UK and Europe to organise the 12th ASMO-UK conference at Leeds, held between 18th-19th July 2022. There were numerous excellent contributions focussing on topology optimization and its application to areas including, additive manufacturing, buckling, wind turbines and wing boxes. Optimization Under Uncertainty was also prominent, with applications including the robust optimization of PCR diagnostic systems and aircraft wings, as was the heat transfer optimization in heat exchangers and turbulent flows. Finally, the importance of Greener Aviation for the aerospace industry was clearly demonstrated by interesting contributions from optimization specialists at Airbus and Rolls Royce.

The organisers were delighted with the very strong international participation at the conference, with numerous colleagues from Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the USA and, of course, the UK, in attendance. The increasing importance of design optimization outside academia was also demonstrated by the contributions from Airbus, CERFACS, COMSOL, ISAE Supaero, ONERA, Rolls Royce, Siemens, Rolls, Vestas Airfoil and Volkswagen AG.

As part of our plans for greater co-ordination between the UK and European Design Optimization communities, we decided to relaunch the new series of ASMO-UK conferences, but now officially extending it to all or Europe, calling the series the ASMO-UK-EU series of conferences. We are very grateful to our colleagues at CENAERO in Belgium for organising the second ASMO-UK-EU conference, which will be held in Belgium between 8th-9th July 2024. CENAERO's unique position working closely with both industry and academia makes it the perfect host for our next conference where we aim to build further on the excellent academic-industry collaborations already established in the fast-developing field of engineering design optimization.

I look forward to welcoming you to CENAERO in July 2024.

Regards,
